Missed the guys from Traffic Jam Malibu rum commercial? Well, here they are again, funny as usual. Enjoy!

Although the most known and drank variation is Malibu Coconut Rum, the market also offers other Malibu Rum flavors for that fans to enjoy in their hot days. Therefore, here is what you could encounter when heading to buy some liqueur from a liqueur store:

Malibu Lime was produced and sold only until 2003 due to its lack of popularity in France and Jamaica. As the title says, its major flavor was Lime.

Malibu Pineapple Rum – higher number of calories and carbs than the coconut rum. Lower alcohol volume – 20% – makes this a very easy to drink rum. If the coconut version seems to sweet, the pineapple one could do the trick. Rum taste is not so prominent though…

Malibu Tropical Banana Rum – mix banana flavor with white rum and you have this brilliant drink, yummy!

Malibu Passion Fruit Rum – this one seems the most disappointing, while when drinking it it’s like discovering a new children drink. So, so sweet…

Malibu Mango Rum – when opened, thoughts fly to tropics instantly! Of course, its taste is sweet, but predominant notes are given by mango, apricot and citrus. 69 calories, no fats or carbs.

Malibu Island Melon Rum – yea, right, I’ll stick to the original coconut one.

As you see, there are actual 6 variations of Malibu Rum, but in the end, it all depends on a person’s taste. Which one do you prefer most and why?

Though this is quite old, I thought it deserves a share, check out this great commercial, it’s brilliant!

As you probably read in the previous post, this rum’s place of origin is Barbados, the famous Caribbean island, and it seems that dates back more than 370 years. Here are some interesting facts about this coconut liqueur along with different variations, how it’s made and others:

1. Let’s start with the origins of “rum” word. It is believed that rum comes either from the Latin “saccharum officinarum”-sugar cane, or from English slang word “rumbullion”-uproar or from the Malaysian drink called “brum” – a traditional drink made from sugar cane. Although these are plausible origins, it seems that rum word comes from Barbados, when in 1654 it was first heard about the “Barbados liquors, called rum”. There it seems that rum, with its stronger alcohol level, was used to cure tropics affections as colds and tiredness.

2. The Malibu Rum’s major ingredient is coconut

3. How is made: the main process is this – local Caribbean sugar mixed with pure water and selected barm. The barm turns the sugar into alcohol which is kept in oak barrels for about two years. After this period, the aged drink is mixed with natural coconut extract and becomes the famous Malibu Coconut Rum everybody enjoy drinking.

4. After this whole process, the Malibu Coconut Rum is bottled in Brighton along with other products like Cockspur, Gilbeys and Popov, by West Indies Rum Distillery Ltd.

5. Numerous other variations of Malibu Rum naturally appeared after the coconut one. Those that worth a mention are Malibu Mango, Passion fruit and Pineapple. However, its very first variation was Malibu Lime, which hit only Barbados and France’s shelves, with poor responses from drinkers.

Hope you enjoyed this little “data sheet” post, however, if you find something to add or to “repair” please feel free to post a comment.

Do you own the “tool” from this picture? If not, preparing a Malibu Rum cocktail might become a difficult task, therefore let’s read a little.

Whether you are just fancying with cocktails and you are preparing them for your own use or you have just started to learn about drinks preparation for taking it as a job, proportions and quantities of ingredients in a cocktail sometimes create confusion.

Let’s jump a little over specialized terms like “oz” or “shot” and see what they really mean. In the end, you will be able to create fantastic drinks using other “tools” you have in your kitchen (especially tablespoons):

1 oz translates into one ounce and it equals 2 tablespoons of that requested ingredient. It is also the measure unit for 30ml.
1 shot means 3 tablespoons or 45ml.
1 cup means 240 ml or 8 oz.

After we talked about what those “alien measurements” stand for, let’s get a little into nutrition also, while it is related to the famous “oz”.

Therefore, for 1 oz of Malibu Rum (or 30ml of that drink) we have the following nutrition facts:

49-51 kcal (Calories)
215 kj (Energy)
5.4 g Carbs (Carbohydrates)
8 mg of Sodium
6.7 g of Alcohol
0 Fats, Fiber, Protein and Cholesterol
